Decker's mom was a soldier wife, and her family relocated to Louisiana at the age of Decker was nine. Decker was a winner in a talent contest in which she performed her favorite song by Patsy's I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart. Decker's family relocated out of Louisiana and into Georgia during the summer of 1995. After she began writing, she made frequent visits to Nashville and visited music companies and record labels in the hope of securing a contract. She was just 17 when she gained the attention of an independent label representative Big Yellow Dog Records who began selling her tracks to artists and labels. Decker signed a deal with Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records President David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. Jessie James released her debut album in the month of August. The album was self-titled release. Jessie James was reasonably successful and included Wanted a single that brushed the Top 40 of the singles charts.
